“Two Kinds”
By: Amy Tan
As I read “Two Kinds,” it really
made me appreciate my mom. My mom encourages me to follow my dreams and be who
I want to be, unlike Jing-mei’s
mom. I did feel bad for Jing-mei’s mother, since she lost everything in China including
her home, parents, husband, and twin daughters. However, I thought it was
terrible that she expected her daughter to be the best at everything. She
wanted Jing-mei to be a prodigy, but Jing-mei did not want to be someone she could
never be. Jing-mei just wanted to be herself and not who or what her mother
expected her to be.
This short story made me feel fortunate that I have such
a great relationship with my mom. I tell my mom everything and she is my best
friend. I cannot image having a mother like Jing-mei’s, since Jing-mei could
not make her mom happy with anything she did. When High School was about to
start, my mom really wanted me to play field hockey and lacrosse because she
wanted me to get involved. I told her I did not really want to, but encouraged
me to try it. I was mad at first, but I wanted to make my mom happy. It ended
being the best decision I ever made because I loved the sports and made so many
friends. I was actually a really good player too and made varsity for both
sports by my sophomore year, and was captain my senior year. I even got many
awards including MVP, Coaches Award, the Knight Award, and I even made the
first conference team. It is like my mom knew all along that I was supposed to
play these sports. If it was not for my mom, I really would have missed out. It
was good that my mom wanted me to play lacrosse and field hockey, but it was
wrong how Jing-mei’s mom forced her do everything. If I had a rough game my mom
did not care, but when Jing-mei messed up at her piano recital, her mother was
devastated. I am so thankful that I have a supportive mom, because not everyone
is as fortunate to have a mom like mine!
I definitely agree with your point of view with this story. My mom is the same in the ways that she is supportive enough but not forcing me into something I don't like. She does encourage me to try new things for example playing basketball in high school. At first i was hesitant because of her history with being a really good player all her years in school. But like you mentioned how you were kind of on the fence when it came to field hockey, that's exactly how I felt. I felt this way but in the end I was able to make a name for myself and branch off. You're blog post stuck out the most to me because we are or at some point were on the same track and having supportive moms !
